While in the depths of dreary winter, we can escape the chill imagining a warm and bountiful spring in Central Ohio, one where fresh, locally-grown produce and markets abound, supplying seasonal fare to the community. A number of local programs help turn these visions into reality, bringing healthful foods closer and simplifying the process from farm to table.

By joining an increasingly popular Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA program, through a local farm, allotted portions of fresh vegetables, herbs and other food items can be enjoyed at regular intervals for a flat rate. Essentially a "share" of a farm, CSAs are like produce subscriptions to items a farmer might have freshest and most readily available. Typically, CSA produce bags are delivered weekly to corresponding drop-off points, usually at farmers markets or related businesses. There are often payment plans in place with options for varying subscription lengths available. Large CSA shares can be divided by families or neighbors, with some choosing to preserve or can items to last year round.

Below is an abbreviated list of CSA programs in the Columbus area:

Bird's Haven Farm, located five miles north of Granville, is currently accepting sign-ups for their fifth-annual CSA program. In their weekly bags, participants can expect between 9 and 11 varieties of produce, ranging from root vegetables and herbs in the earlier weeks to berries, summer corn, melons and squash later on. 11 and 21-week programs are available, with a number of pick-up points and subscriptions sizes to choose from. For the first year, Bird's Haven Farm is offering special add-on opportunities to their regular CSA, including local cheese maker Osage Lane Creamery, meat purveyors Oink Moo Cluck, honey and herbs from Mockingbird Meadows and River Road Coffee. CSA visitors can learn more and sign up for the Bird's Haven CSA on their website.

Wayward Seed offers another popular CSA program in the area, where weekly produce bags will contain an average of 7-8 vegetables and 2-3 fruits, delivered to shareholders at least 20 weeks of the year. Partnerships with Eshleman Fruit Farm and Polter's Berry Farm means a Wayward Seed CSA will always contain unique and locally-sourced fruit options for needed summer refreshment.

VanScoy Farm gives their CSA subscribers the option to sign up along 10-week increments, of which three are offered. Some participants elected to receive produce bags earliest and latest in the summer, during the first and third increments, with a break in the middle to allow for home gardening. Others prefer to sign up for the entire 30-week subscription. Beans, tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuces, among other chemical-free produce items, are included in the CSA which is described further on the VanScoy Farm website.

Sippel Family Farm provides a CSA from May to mid-November that includes only produce grown and harvested on the farm itself, including leafy greens in the spring, peppers and eggplant in summer and broccoli and cabbages come fall, among many other options. Pick up is available at the farm in Mount Gilead and three other locations across Columbus. A detailed list of FAQs and other CSA information can be found on the Sippel Family Farm website.

Mockingbird Meadows Farm puts a twist on the traditional CSA program by providing members with unique opportunities along with their monthly offerings of, among numerous options, natural herbs, soaps, tonics and raw honey. CSA subscribers receive an invitation to farm open house in July, an herbal consultation with a specialist and a monthly newsletter detailing the contents of each share. Mockingbird Meadows explains more on their most recent CSA flyer.

Rock Dove Farm, based out of West Jefferson, will again offer three sizes of their CSA this year. Subscribers can choose between half shares, full shares and a double share, packing twice as much food as the double and perfect for spilitting up among families or groups. Weekly pick-ups are are available Thursdays or Saturdays at convenient locations around the city, including the Clintonville and North Market farmers markets. The Rock Dove CSA info and order form contains additional details.

Frijolito Farm is venturing off the traditional CSA path again this year, reinstating a program that enjoyed success in initial run during the 2011 season. The farm is selling gift cards, available in customizable increments which can be spent on anything Frijolio Farm has for sale, be it at their Columbus store set to open in May, or at farmers markets they frequent. Offerings include free-range eggs, free-range poultry products, seasonal produce and fresh bread. Currently, any gift card purchased will receive a 10% bonus, boosting a $100 gift card to $110.
